Too Scared to Sing?
I remember my first singing lesson – I was so nervous! Was I going to be judged? What if I went wrong? What if I was a lost cause? What if I got told I couldn’t sing? SO many questions crossed my mind….. I have now been coaching or teaching singing for 14 years and the thing which I come across more than anything else is nervous singers. It’s such a shame that so many people lack confidence and can feel vulnerable. This can be for any number of reasons. Everybody comes with their own unique experience of singing.
I specifically remember a lady who came into the studio for her taster session. She was literally shaking and told me that she had been asked to sing at a friends wedding. We chatted for a bit and then I asked her if she wanted to try some warm ups. She started to cry. She really wanted to do it but she crumbled. It took a long time to encourage her to sing. I was singing with her at first for moral support and slowly but surely she started to do more and more by herself to eventually, a few months after, singing the song she was asked to sing for the wedding. It sounded great! It got to the day of the wedding and I was thinking about it a lot throughout the day…I got the text to say that she had done it and was so proud of herself and happy! That student moved to France shortly after, I was sad to say goodbye but she had achieved what we had set out to do with me so it was a happy ending. A couple of months after I got an email from her saying she was a front singer in a band!! So amazing! I was so proud of her and how far she had come…it took some time to get going but she got there and beyond.
I always say to the people that all of our tutors will go at the pace of the student – we won’t push at all. If something isn’t quite right technically with a student or the student isn’t happy with the way that they sound, we are deciding on the plan of action to help – we are never putting anything on the student and never judging what they are doing. We’re here to guide and support. We want your experience to be fun and fulfilling as singing should be.
If you are unsure whether to try it or not, DO IT! The benefits of singing are huge and you will feel so much better for it! you can contact us firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange a FREE taster session.
